National Security and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Division within DST Group is looking for a suitably experienced applicant to fill the role of Wide Area Motion Imagery (WAMI) system specialist. Under limited guidance the successful applicant will be responsible for managing all aspects of the research and development of advanced wide area motion imagery sensors and associated processing techniques to address challenging Defence intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) problems. This includes using a multidisciplinary approach to perform technical and project planning to ensure the successful integration and operation of the sensor within the Defence Experimentation Airborne Platform (DEAP).

The WAMI system specialist will work closely with staff, contractors and other specialist scientific, technical and project engineers to achieve Defence outcomes.  The role requires liaising with international partners, other Government organisations, universities and Defence industry. The position also requires a contribution to, and participation in, field trials with experimental equipment, including airborne flight trials.

Duties and Key Result Areas:

  • Responsible for the end-to-end management of electro-optic motion imagery sensor systems to facilitate sensor and system hardware upgrades, software development, successful test outcomes and successful integration and operation.
  • Collaborate with project, hardware, electrical and optical scientists and engineers to design, develop and integrate sensor subsystems.
  • Design, develop and implement image processing algorithms and techniques for automated processing and exploitation, and evaluate the results that are relevant to integrated ISR systems.
  • Participate in and contribute to field trials including operation of the WAMI sensor as a flight crew member aboard the DEAP.
  • Manage and maintain a research and development laboratory including network and system administration duties to ensure:

            - The effective storage, processing and availability of data, tools and products.
            - The laboratory is available for various roles (e.g. demonstrations and presentations, systems development and testing, and ground                     station trial operations).

Key requirements of the role:

  • Demonstrated understanding and/or experience of Software Engineering principles to develop and manage changes and upgrades to WAMI systems.
  • Demonstrated understanding and/or experience in fundamental System Engineering principles (e.g. to the level required to establish a Verification and Validation Plan and implement plans and procedures to manage system level changes).
  • Demonstrated experience in application development using C, C++, Java, C# and Python and Unix shell scripting.
  • Demonstrated experience in system administration, configuration and application development with CentOS (or other Fedora based distribution).

Demonstrated ability to clearly report progress to supervisors and communicate complex technical results and their implications to Defence and other stakeholders
