The Role

The position of the Transverse Senior Engineer is critical to the CASG Ship Acquisition – Surface Combatants branch, as it is an essential component of the Platform Engineering workforce.

In particular, the position provides the following responsibilities:

  • Through the application of engineering knowledge and experience, act as a SEA5000 Phase 1 technical assurance advisor in the field of Transverse Engineering, which focuses on elements platform susceptibility and vulnerability along with other areas of physical integration (aviation and combat systems) and engineering management;
  • Review and evaluate that the HCF-delivered technical and design materiel meets requirements, legislative policy and regulatory frameworks. Provide associated recommendations and contribute to the implementation of actions;
  • Identify and manage risks/issues and opportunities related to the Transverse design areas inherent to the T26 reference ship, as well as changes to those systems as part of the Hunter Class design and prototype / Batch 1 production phase; and
  • Investigate and report any aspects of the HCF design that are non-conformant with either the contracted design requirements or the certification basis and, where directed, develop risk assessments, recommendations and manage courses of action to address any matters or issues arising.
  • Evaluate and provide advice on the impact to the HCF Survivability design aspects of integrating new technologies and capabilities and assist in the development of technical requirements for future batches of the ship build.

The CASG Ships Acquisition – Surface Combatants (SASC) branch - Hunter Class Frigates project (HCFP) prides itself on being an inclusive employer, committed to diversity and equity in the work place.

 

This role sits within the Transverse section of the Platform Engineering team, which reports to the SEA5000 Platform Engineering Director. This section works alongside the other technical sections (Electrical and Propulsion, Naval Architecture and Mechanical/Auxiliaries) as well as the Systems Engineering team.

The successful candidate will have the ability to work within a challenging and complex engineering environment, with the SEA5000 Project working closely in collaboration with our ship building partners, BAESMA. The ability to utilise good communications at multiple levels and a natural inclination to work collaboratively with Department of Defence colleagues and industrial partners are attributes that are considered essential.

 

The Engineering Design Strategy currently employed by SEA5000 Project is new to the Department of Defence and challenges the traditional systems engineering approach to design. The SEA5000 project will challenge your way of thinking and encourage you to be innovative and decisive to ensure that the SEA5000 project is successful and provides the ASW Frigate capability that the Royal Australian Navy needs for the future.
