Under limited guidance, you will undertake research and development (R&D) in Radio Frequency (RF) and digital components applicable to High Frequency (HF) radar.

As part of a highly motivated team you will develop new and enhanced equipment for Australia’s world leading HF radar program, which includes the Jindalee Operational Radar Network. You will also participate in sophisticated experimental field trials to evaluate new technologies and techniques.

You will have a good understanding of RF engineering techniques, as well as digital design and signal processing techniques applicable to radar.  You will be able to demonstrate a high level of written and oral communications skills.

Experience in designing, building and testing electronic systems is highly desirable, as is a good understanding of HF radar and ionospheric propagation. Experience with Matlab, C/C++, Python, GPUs & CUDA is desirable, but not essential.

Duties and Key Result Areas: Working as part of a small, multi-disciplinary team, you will undertake challenging R&D in the area of HF radar technology development and testing.   This includes:

 

  • Contributing to an applied R&D program through the design, development and testing of RF and digital hardware systems;
  • Contributing to the design, development and testing of software control systems for experimental HF radar systems;
  • Participating in remote field experiments;
  • Contributing to the analysis of real-world RF data sets;
  • Preparing technical publications and reports, and presenting outcomes to Defence partners and clients;
  • Maintaining up to date knowledge in selected scientific or engineering research disciplines and broadening your knowledge as it relates to RF and digital techniques applicable to HF radar;
  • Collaborating with other Defence Science and Technology (DST) teams, academia, industry and other national/international research organisations in order to enhance science and technology (S&T) capability and impact.

 

Other Requirements:   

  • Travel, both within Australia and overseas is an expected part of this role.
  • The successful candidate may be required to upgrade to an NV2 security clearance.
