The Aircraft Maintenance And Flight Trials Unit (AMAFTU) is a small team of aviators, engineers and technical staff that has more than 50 years’ experience in maritime ‘first of type’ aviation flight trials and is the approved test agency for rotary wing aircraft for the Royal Australian Navy.

Flight trials establish the operating envelopes for rotary wing and unmanned air vehicles with RAN Ships and an essential component in determining operating limits is the Flight Test Instrumentation (FTI) that gathers real time performance data from the Ship and Aircraft and displays this information on a display console through specialised software applications.

The Avionic Systems Technical Officer (AVTO) at AMAFTU is responsible for the design and testing of specialised FTI. This traineeship has been established to develop another AMAFTU AVTO and not only offers ongoing employment at the APS6 level following completion of the traineeship but will provide two years of dedicated training and development (at the APS5 level) to build the required specialist skills needed for the role. This position will offer formal training as well as an extended period of On-The-Job training in design and testing of FTI.

AMAFTU is looking for a motivated applicant who is technically savvy and holds interests in the fields of data communications, instrumentation, computer networking, electronics or mechatronics. A background in aviation or shipborne aviation operations is desirable but not essential. The intent of the traineeship is to provide experience in this very specialised environment.

The successful applicant will enjoy a challenging and very rewarding career in flight test working both, in a small team and individually. Following completion of the traineeship, the new AVTO will be relied upon as the Fleet Air Arm FTI specialist. Instrumentation products designed by the AVTO and AMAFTU engineers directly lead to published Ship/Aircraft operating limits and Defence capability outcomes.

Application Closing Date:  Wednesday 10 April, 2019
