If you are looking for a challenging career that makes a difference, perhaps a role in the Department of Defence working on Australia’s most complex Defence naval capabilities is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for. Whether you are looking to start your journey in engineering management or you are a seasoned professional, we are looking for capable, flexible and bold problem solvers to jump into a range of challenging and rewarding roles. The Australian Government is laying the foundations for a nationwide naval shipbuilding enterprise to support the implementation of the Naval Shipbuilding Plan. The Plan outlines the Australian Government’s vision for the Australian Naval Shipbuilding Enterprise and the significant investment required in coming decades. Modernisation of our naval forces is a complex, national endeavor aimed at building and sustaining Australia’s naval capabilities. It will create economic growth through Australian industry involvement and in securing Australian jobs for future generations through a continuous naval shipbuilding industry.

The Department of Defence will play a critical role in establishing the naval shipbuilding enterprise over the next two decades, and that is why we are calling for applications from talented, motivated and skilled people to drive this critical Government agenda. In addition to being involved in building Australia’s future naval fleet, you will also have access to generous and attractive working conditions as an Australian Public Servant in Defence. Information on Defence employees’ working conditions, including an attractive remuneration package with a salary within the range and a generous superannuation contribution (15.4%), can be sourced from the ‘Employment Agreement’ section of this information pack.

This position falls within Combat Management & Payload Systems (CMPS) Branch. The occupant will lead a diverse team of Engineers delivering a world leading Radar technology into the Anzac Class Frigates. Working under broad direction, the Systems Engineering Manager will be required to achieve systems engineering assurance for one of Defence Major Projects in support of the Commonwealth Government’s continuous naval shipbuilding plan through development and delivery of Combat Management and Payload Systems. Candidates from a range of engineering disciplines (Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Systems) with engineering management and system certification experience are encouraged to apply.

The ideal applicant would have knowledge, skills and experience in:

  • Providing engineering assurance for materiel acquisitions in a dynamic project-engineering environment.
  • Managing project engineering throughout the phases of system definition, acquisition and transition into service.
  • Managing, leading and mentoring a small team of engineers to provide consolidated advice across a range of engineering and technical issues.
  • Managing the complexity of dealing with a diverse stakeholder group in a fast paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
