The Role
Responsibilities of this position include:

  1. Applying knowledge and engineering expertise in areas such as:
    • Ships stability,
    • Hydrodynamics,
    • General naval architecture,
    • Requirements and standards for naval vessels,
    • Identify risk to Seaworthiness, and
    • Assisting ship emergencies.
  2. Providing concise and accurate engineering advice to Director General Engineering Navy (DGENG-N), and senior management.
  3. Assist Fleet certification through technical analysis of platform systems, including the development and delivery of Trim and Stability Handbooks.
  4. Development of engineering standards and procedures, including representing the RAN on international standards working groups and with partner Navies.
  5. Conduct onboard audits of inclining experiments; this can occasionally occur interstate, in remote locations and on military platforms.
  6. Engineering evaluations, tests and trials for new designs and in-service ships.
  7. Managing a team of technical specialists across a range of disciplines.
  8. Education and mentoring across Naval Engineering and maritime communities.

About our Team
Ship Hydromechanics and Support Craft  (SHSC) Cell is within DNE, and is the primary support group providing specialist engineering knowledge, and advice to the Royal Australian Navy, through the Director General Engineering Navy (DGENG-N).

You will be joining a dedicated group of professionals working with vessels at the forefront of defence technologies, in disciplines of stability, hydrodynamics, naval architecture and support craft specialisations.

Our team prides itself on the ability to think laterally and develop unique solutions to meet the demands of naval vessels. Tests and trials, in-depth analysis and the creation of requirements underpin the SHSC’s ability to help Navy understand and manage the risks associated with the duties of Navy vessels.

The ideal candidate will exercise initiative and judgement, have strong analytical skills in the field of Naval Architecture, with experience in ships stability. They will to a culture of cooperation and sharing of knowledge, take on leadership and mentoring roles for graduate and junior engineers.

  • The ability to prioritise and manage tasks in a demanding environment.
  • Demonstrated capability to influence key stakeholders to achieve strategic outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate, manage and report on technical activities, and providing technical assurance of equipment, systems and processes.
  • Highly developed verbal, written and computer communication skills to logically convey thoughts and ideas.
  • Strong skills in analysing, synthesising and presenting technical information and data in a clear and concise manner that aids decision making.
  • Practical application and experience of engineering/technical judgement through assessing condition of physical assets.
