The Role
Are you looking for a leadership opportunity in a challenging and highly complex enterprise? An exciting opportunity exists for a highly experienced Systems Engineer to join the new Space Systems Branch and work on Joint Project 9102. This multi-billion dollar project will deliver the next generation SATCOM capability, including Australian owned and operated geostationary communications satellites, for the Australian Defence Force (ADF).

The positions require stakeholder (including industry) engagement and therefore will need to possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills. We are seeking candidates with a diverse range of experience and backgrounds in systems engineering, including people who have gained their experience outside Defence and Government.

About our Team
The new Space Systems Branch has been established to acquire and sustain SATCOM systems, and be a trusted advisor of SATCOM systems for the Australian Defence Organisation. The Joint Project 9102 team comprises professionals from various disciplines including project management, engineering, commercial, and logistics. This multi-disciplinary team is composed of highly skilled and motivated Australian Public Servants, Australian Defence Force personnel, and contracted personnel. The project team are operating at a fast pace in order to deliver Australia’s first sovereign controlled military SATCOM project with very tight schedule. Hence we are looking for an experienced and high performance Engineer to achieve our project objective. The team works from Brindabella Park offices in Canberra and maintains close collaboration with other parts of Defence and other Government Agencies.

Our Ideal Candidate
Joint Project 9102 is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Systems Engineer with an interest in delivering this strategically significant capability to the ADF.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience and comprehensive knowledge of Defence Engineering Management, preferably in large acquisition projects or sustainment and be able to demonstrate strong leadership capability. They will also have extensive knowledge of and compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and defence’s mission and policy requirements.

Key attributes:

  • Extensive knowledge of the methodology, systems and procedures within the engineering management function;
  • Strong business acumen and sound commercial judgement;
  • A thorough understanding of Defence’s engineering disciplines;
  • Demonstrated experience managing teams in a complex environment;
  • Excellent communication and customer engagement skills with ability to negotiate and build relationships with stakeholders; and
  • High level organisational skills, self-drive and initiative with the ability to influence others to achieve results and business objectives.
