We are seeking highly motivated science and technology Group Leaders to lead, nurture and inspire teams of scientists, engineers and technicians to deliver innovative and high impact research for Defence. Group Leaders report to the S&T Research Leader in one of the following four Branches; Space Intelligence, Intelligence Analytics, Surveillance Systems, and Integrated ISR.

We currently have two Group leader positions vacant:

  • S&T Group Leader – Sensor Systems Analysis, in Surveillance Systems Branch


Provides research and technical leadership in Radio Frequency (RF) sensor systems and RF signatures by undertaking sensor system modelling, analysis, test and evaluation. (NV2 minimum Security clearance required)


  • S&T Group Leader – Automated Imagery Analysis, in Space Intelligence Branch


Provides research and technical leadership in automated processing of imagery data to deliver tactical, operational and intelligence information using computer vision and machine learning. (PV clearance required required)

The role requires you to:

  • Contribute and enhance collaborative opportunities and partnerships with Australia’s leading scientists, building and sustaining effective relationships with a network of internal and external research partners across academia, industry and Government
  • Provide leadership and direction to ensure a high-level of integration and consistency
  • Lead transdisciplinary teams in the implementation of the Defence Science and Technology enterprise
  • Enhance Defence leading edge capability by generating new knowledge and responding flexibly to a rapidly evolving environment
  • Maintain currency in Science and Technology disciplines relevant to the role
  • Manage increasing and highly complex workloads within an integrated workforce
  • Proactively manage change and promote a strong culture of scientific excellence
  • Deliver high quality scientific reporting including briefs, publications and presentations
  • Provide strategic advice to senior management and stakeholders as well as lead complex work that has strategic significance
  • Assess the future, anticipate priorities and develop long-term plans to achieve results.

A merit pool will be created from the list of suitable applicants which may be used to fill future positions in the event a position becomes vacant within the 12 months from gazettal date of this position.




About the Team
Intelligence, Surveillance and Space (ISS) Division undertakes internationally-recognised research and development into technologies aimed at enhancing the national capability to produce accurate, relevant and timely actionable intelligence for both Defence and national agency decision makers. It comprises of four Major S&T Branches:

  • Surveillance Systems Branch undertakes research to develop and demonstrate resilient surveillance system capabilities to enhance current and future ADF operational systems that enable Defence to prevail in contested environments. The MSTC comprises technology areas including active and passive radar, imaging radar, electro-optical (EO) sensing and hyperspectral imaging systems. It conducts research and development in exemplar sensor technologies and systems, processing and interpretation of sensor data, system analysis and evaluation, signature measurement, and the protection of surveillance systems from interference and jamming.
  • Integrated ISR Branch researches technologies associated with the defence ISR enterprise that deliver pervasive, persistent and resilient situation awareness. It conceives and develops advanced ISR technologies and techniques to protect the ISR mission as well as methods to integrate and disseminate ISR information from multiple sources and suites for overall Defence ISR capability.
  • Intelligence Analysis Branch researchers how to improve the situational awareness for intelligence analysts and decision-makers in the Defence and National Security community by automatically making sense through the generation of knowledge from large volumes of all-source data sources such as unstructured linguistic data, video, imagery, speech and text as well as the fused products from ISR sensor systems.
  • Space Intelligence Branch develops innovative space capabilities and exemplar missions to enable Defence to prevail in the contested space environment and enhance its space based future capabilities.
