About the opportunity

The Australian Centre for Field Robotics (ACFR) at the University’s Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies, in partnership with Rio Tinto, a global mining company, established the Rio Tinto Centre for Mine Automation (RTCMA) in 2007, and is extending this centre for a further five years through to 2023. The aim of the RTCMA is to develop and implement the vision of a fully autonomous, remotely operated mine.

This is a major research and development initiative with a clear focus on delivering world leadership in mining automation. The RTCMA is seeking a candidate for the position of Professor of Practice (Mining Automation) to lead the centre and a team of approximately 30 researchers and technical staff. The position will have an executive function to support the development of, and implement, the R&D strategy, and will manage the day-to-day operational activities of the team. Leadership and team management skills, together with the capacity to communicate strategy and technical direction, will be essential.

The Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies consists of an Academic Services Directorate comprising of Education support and Research support. The Faculty has five Schools (Civil Engineering, Chemical and Bimolecular Engineering, Electrical and Information Engineering, Information Technologies and Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering) undertaking world standard research and offering bachelors programs and coursework and research postgraduate degrees.

Term and remuneration

The position is full-time, fixed term for 5 years, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new appointees.
