Our Opportunity 

As part of Thales Australia, Australian Munitions is the largest supplier of explosive ordnance to the Australian Defence Force, with a successful track record delivering ammunition, propellants, explosives and related services including acid production and industrial waste treatment to Defence and commercial markets.

As a Process Safety Engineer you will be embedded in a production team reporting outside the team to the Health Safety Environment (HSE) Manager. The Process Safety Engineer provides specialist risk and safety engineering advice and services to support safe production. As a Process Safety Engineer you will maintain  the safety management systems and controls that support safe production in a chemical and explosive manufacturing context. 


  • Maintain the Major Hazard Facility (MHF) Licence, the supporting Safety Case and annual MHF reporting obligations.
  • Facilitate risk assessments for hazard identification, control of hazards, assessment of consequences and identification actions needed to maintain safety critical controls.
  • Ensure Management of Change recommendations identify compliance obligations, best practice solutions, inherent safety  and ongoing improvement of layers of protection in process design.
  • Work closely with key stakeholders including production, maintenance, project engineering and management staff for the delivery of safe production.
  • Review safe systems of work including operating and maintenance procedures against identified critical controls to ensure effectiveness.
  • Lead Health Safety and Environmental incident investigations and make recommendations on findings

About You

  • Tertiary qualification in Chemical Engineering, Industrial Chemist or other related Engineering field.
  • Demonstrated understanding and application of Regulations with an emphasis on MHF or equivalent process safety obligations
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the use of MS Office suite to create reports
  • Extensive understanding of the principles of processing chemical plant engineering design, reliability and risk control.
  • Demonstrated experience in risk assessment methodologies including HAZOP and LOPA
  • A pragmatic thinker capable of creating practical solutions out of complex issues
  • Demonstrate an understanding of human factors to support a process safety culture
  • Able to work independently and effectively manage managing your own time effectively

Special Requirements 

International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) are applicable and as such, your nationality may be a factor in determining your suitability for this role.

You will also need to successfully clear a pre-employment medical and police check.
