Environmental Services and Regulation (ESR) provides targeted, consistent and transparent regulation that facilitates sustainable development in Queensland. ESR proactively manages and monitors environmental risks through a modern and innovative regulatory framework that includes assessment, compliance, investigation and enforcement programs. ESR also provides extensive frontline services both centrally and regionally.
Principal Environmental Officers work to improve the state of Queensland’s environment by identifying environmental risks, ensuring compliance with environmental legislation and policies, providing scientific and technical support for a wide range of projects and contributing to the implementation of environmental management and protection strategies. Principal Environmental Officers are required to provide leadership, advice and direction for their area of technical/ professional expertise.
Environmental risks relate to those activities that have the potential to impact environmental values including land, air, water and people.
The Business Centre Coal within the Coal and Central Queensland Compliance Branch delivers environmental assessment services in relation to the coal mining sector. Activities that will be assessed are predominately related to the coal industry and coal port operations with impacts that include air pollution, noise pollution, waste management, rehabilitation and environmental offsets for impacts to Matters of State Environmental Significance.
