Located in the Laverton region, AngloGold Ashanti Australia's Sunrise Dam is one of Western Australia's premier gold operations. In late 2020 a new satellite open pit was approved (Golden Delicious) which will supplement the large-scale underground operation that employs more than 650 people, and produces approximately 260,000 ounces of gold per annum. Ongoing investment in underground and regional exploration at Sunrise Dam has extended the mine life to 2031, with the opportunity for further extensions. Operating on an attractive 8/6(or variant thereof) fly-in fly-out roster, Sunrise Dam boasts excellent accommodation and facilities.We are now seeking a committed Geotechnical Engineer to join our Underground Mining team at Sunrise Dam Gold Mine. Reporting to the Superintendent - Geotechnical Services, this role is accountable for the monitoring and management of all geotechnical hazards for both the inactive open pit and the active underground mine. This includes geotechnical and monitoring data collection, evaluation & interpretation of geotechnical data, analysis of designs, monitoring of design versus actual and providing advice to the mine planning, production and operations team. This role is FIFO 8/6 from Perth.The main tasks of the role include but are not limited to:
  • Ensure personal compliance with company safety requirements and assist in developing and implementing improved work practices to reduce the risk of injury and improve productivity.
  • Regular data collection through underground geotechnical mapping and core logging.
  • Carry out stability analysis of excavations and designs through kinematic, empirical and numerical techniques.
  • Maintain the site geotechnical monitoring systems, including the microseismic monitoring system and the pit prism monitoring system.
  • Record, interrogate and report on monitoring data.
  • Regular Underground and Open pit inspections and Audits.
  • Support completion of weekly and monthly geotechnical quality control reports.
  • Keeping abreast with new developments associated with geotechnical engineering.
  • Liaison with the Mining Department, Mine Planning team, Exploration and the Underground contractors and provide final sign-off on development, ground support and stoping plans.

The ideal candidate will preferably possess:
  • Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Mining Engineering or equivalent;
  • Minimum two years' experience in a mining role with exposure to geotechnical aspects of underground hard rock mining development and stoping methods;
  • Familiar with the application of the following software programs: Map3D, Rocscience programs, Mine Planning Software (Vulcan/Surpac/Deswik), Microsoft Office
  • Exposure to Geotechnical Block Modelling
  • Exposure to ISS Micro-seismic system
  • Familiar to the Geotechnical requirements of Cemented pastefill in underground mines, (mix design, QAQC requirements and paste wall design) would be highly sought.
  • An understanding of the mine planning process;
  • Ability to analyse and interpret geotechnical and monitoring data;
  • Commitment to safety, quality and teamwork.
  • Good written and verbal skills;
  • Superior organisational and interpersonal skills
  • Current C class WA drivers' licence
  • A National Police Clearance
