The Role
Research Engineering (RE) are looking for a suitably qualified and motivated Sheetmetal/Fabrication person to work in our Fabrication Facility. Reporting to Leader of Mechanical Fabrication (LMFAB), the successful applicant will work under general direction and have demonstrated experience and knowledge in a range of materials, manual folding equipment and numerically controlled technology. Experience in laser Cutting, Waterjet Cutting and Welding would be advantageous but not essential. The successful applicant will have the ability to interpret CAD models, technical drawings to AS1100 and sketches, and be able to work comfortably within a multi-disciplined team environment to achieve outcomes and supply solutions required by DST and Defence clients. The willingness to learn new capability is essential.

Position Duties
Under general direction the Mechanical Fabrication Technician will undertake fabrication/sheetmetal operations through:

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret technical drawings, sketches and CAD models to successfully manufacture prototype mechanical components.
  • An excellent working knowledge in the computer aided manufacturing discipline, to achieve ideal strategy for multi axis tool paths at advanced levels.
  • Experience using a vast range of 2.5D CNC equipment.
  • The knowledge and ability to carry out complex assemblies. 
  • Experience in working to engineering specifications.
  • The ability to apply and adapt bespoke manufacturing techniques.
  • Experience in Welding Processes.
  • The knowledge and ability to carry out routine maintenance on fabrication Equipment’s.
  • Willingness to learn new technology in Fabrication facility.
