Austest Laboratories is the leading Australian Testing Facility, providing comprehensive test and qualification services for defence, aerospace, rail, automotive, medical and other industries. We are currently seeking a dynamic and motivated mechanical/mechatronic engineer or technician to join our team working on vibration, shock, load, pressure, temperature, humidity, ingress protection, acoustics, solar radiation and other forms of environmental testing.

The position involves dealing with all aspects of testing projects, from handling the initial enquiry through to design and setup of test apparatus, execution of test, analysis of results and preparation of a formal report. The successful candidate will be expected to work in close coordination with other team members and direct contact with customers, government representatives and regulatory bodies, so excellent written and oral communication skills are absolutely essential for the role.

Testing activities include significant hands-on work so a successful candidate must be competent in use of basic mechanical tools and equipment. The role would be particularly suitable for a skilled mechanical/mechatronic engineer or technician with either a trade background or considerable experience in workshop environment who doesn’t mind getting his/her hands dirty and enjoys both practical and theoretical aspects of engineering.

The main responsibilities include:

  • Setup and execution of various environmental test (mechanical, climatic, pressure, acoustics, corrosion, etc.)
  • Processing of test results and preparation of formal test reports
  • Design and fabrication of test fixtures
  • Setting up and tuning of mechanical testing equipment
  • Design and preparation of bespoke testing systems - pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical, etc.
  • Design and development of new testing solutions
  • Maintenance and upgrades of machines and facilities

The desirable attributes for a successful candidate:

  • Methodical and structured approach to work with the ability to maintain clear and concise written records (notes, logs, etc.)
  • Attention to details
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Formal qualification in mechanical or mechatronic engineering, degree, diploma or equivalent
  • Sound understanding of basic principles of mechanical engineering - static, dynamics, mechanical vibrations, thermodynamics and fluid mechanics
  • Previous experience with measurements and data acquisition, use of transducers and other instrumentation as well as subsequent signal processing/analysis
  • Experience in preparation of formal technical documentation
  • Comfortable with basic mechanical assembly and fitting operations – e.g. drilling, cutting, threading and if possible welding
  • Ability to work from rough sketches and concept diagrams
  • Ability to read electrical circuit diagrams and perform basic electrical troubleshooting

The work environment is very dynamic with typical projects length of only 3-4 weeks. Hence ability to operate efficiently and independently is of paramount importance.

Previous experience in laboratory testing and qualification would be very highly regarded, but not essential.
