The Naval Technical Bureau is an organisation of subject matter experts who conducts investigations, provides technical advice, and sets technical requirements within the Navy. We are seeking an Electrical Engineer to join the Electrical Systems Cell. Based in Sydney, you will report locally to the Senior Electrical Engineer. The cell consists of engineers and technical staff based in Sydney and Canberra, and is recognised as a unique source of knowledge and subject-matter expertise in naval electrical power and lighting systems. You will be responding to demands from customers all around Australia and collaborate with personnel from a variety of different organisations, disciplines and backgrounds. You will be contributing at the coalface, with occasions where you are required to work outside of the office, in construction-like environments or in machinery spaces.

To be successful in the role, you must be technically minded, methodical, organised, have good verbal and written communication skills, and be highly motivated to acquire experience and develop professionally:

  • You will exercise your initiative, organisation, diligence, and judgement to achieve the required outcome on time with limited direction.
  • You will gain a broad understanding of naval engineering to allow you to work with subject matter experts from other disciplines, and you will develop and contribute specific knowledge and expertise in electrical engineering in return.
  • You will gain a sound understanding of working under regulatory systems, and apply a methodical risk management based approach to your work.
  • Your people skills will be important as you will be working with a variety of stakeholders, some based remotely.

We value diversity and welcome applicants from outside of the naval industry who can demonstrate their technical ability, adaptability, and enthusiasm.

You are entering the naval engineering sector at a time of significant investment and expansion. You will contribute to delivery, enhancement, and maintenance of advanced and complex maritime capabilities. You will be provided support in continuing your professional development, gaining Chartered Professional status with Engineers Australia, training to broaden your area of practice, and opportunity to acquire in depth technical expertise throughout the course of your work.
