RDA is presently seeking a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer to expand our existing Queensland based tactical vehicle design engineering team. Our work environment if flexible and friendly and the present team members have a broad range of skills, cultural background, gender and experience.

As a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer with RDA, you will be responsible for providing technical leadership in the design of advanced systems, subsystems and components for our tracked armoured vehicles over the product life cycle. While working closely with cross functional project teams, high levels of independent thought and action will be required, alongside mentoring less experienced team members.

You can anticipate some of your additional day-to-day tasks to include:

  • Lead a technical project or capability team;
  • Conceive and select concepts in response to requirements using a range of tools and methods, including weighted Trade Off Studies, FMECA etc.;
  • Realise selected concepts into documented prototype designs using integrated PDM/CAD (AGILE/TEAMCENTER/NX);
  • Support the manufacture and verification of prototypes and incorporate test results as appropriate;
  • Develop, release and maintain production documentation;
  • Participate in formal and informal Design Reviews;
  • Provide problem solving and continuous improvement support to Production and Through Life Support; and
  • Assist in the development of departmental capability.

The experience and skillset best suited to this role include:

  • Tertiary qualification in a Mechanical Engineering that is recognized by The Institute of Engineers Australia;
  • 10 to 15 years’ experience in military or automotive vehicle design;
  • Demonstrated technical team leadership experience;
  • Have excellent written English communication skills using automotive engineering terminology;
  • Must currently hold or be eligible to gain the appropriate Australian Security Clearance;
  • Ability to travel interstate and/or internationally when required

Additional it would be advantageous to have:

  • Engineered product environment (preferably with Siemens NX);
  • Experience with armoured vehicle systems - mobility, weapons, protection, and mission.
  • Experience with Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA);
  • Experience working within an ISO9001 framework;
  • Have significant experience in interpreting complex engineering function and performance specifications, and a capacity to identify existing technical solutions to meet these specifications;
